  • 1연출의도 | Directing intention

    ① 만화가 남정훈의 부산지역 드로잉 연작은 어느새 공적인 영역으로 접어들었다. 그의 작업물은 이미 기록물로서 온전하게 그 기능을 해내고 있으며, 그 속에 더해진 만화적 상상력은 무엇이든 콘텐츠가 될 수 있는 시대의 흐름 속에서 새로운 오리지널로 자리매김하는데 손색이 없다. 그런 의미에서 여전히 즐기고 있는 그의 기록의 여정을 소명이라고 까지 표현하고 싶지는 않지만, 쉴 새 없이 펜을 놀리는 그의 옆모습은 점점 더 거룩해져 가고 있음은 분명했다. 밖에서 안으로, 차분하게 가라앉듯 그의 몸에 와닿는 외부의 순간들. 잠시 일체감을 이루었다가 다시 자신만의 호흡으로 변용하는 그의 찰나를 기록하고 싶었다.

    ② 만화가 남정훈이 자신만의 드로잉을 통해서 자생적인 힘을 기를 수밖에 없었던 이유는 지역을 형성해 왔던 그 윗세대의 파란곡절과 치열함을 몸소 체감하며 자랐기 때문일지도 모른다. (물론 부산의 굴곡진 세월을 모두 경험한 세대라고 할 수는 없지만, 이제는 지역의 소멸까지 마주하게 된 그 아랫 세대에게 본능적으로 과거와 현재를 이어 줄 만한, 손에 잡히는 무언가를 애써 찾아왔음을 옆에서 지켜볼 수 있었다) 그래서인지 그의 드로잉 속에서 표현되는 만화적 상상력은 그의 일부를 이루고 있던 (혹은 그의 주변에 흩어져 있던), 결코 가볍지 않은 그의 기억조각을 하나씩 줍는 과정, 그 자체임을 증언하려 했다.

    ③ 부산시는 한국전쟁 때 생겨난 피란유산 9개(장소형 유산 4개, 건축물형 유산 5개)를 유네스코 세계유산 잠정목록으로 등재시킨 뒤, 2028년 최종 등재를 목표로 추진 중에 있다. 부산지역 드로잉 연작을 다양한 전시의 형태로 기획하여 대중에게 선보이고 있는 만화가 남정훈 역시 필연적으로 부산의 피란유산을 향할 무렵이다. 언제나 그랬듯 두 다리를 부지런히 움직이며. 태블릿 위로 꾸준하게 선을 그으며. 그 일련의 행위를 단순 반복할 때 생겨나는 운동성이 유일한 추동력이 될 뿐. 공적인 영역에 사적인 기억조각 하나 얹기란 사실 쉽지도 어렵지도 않은 일이다. 그래서 그는 '유엔평화로를 걷는다. 만화도 그린다.'

    ① Nam Jeong-hoon's drawings of Busan have evolved into public records, blending imagination and documentation seamlessly. While his work may not be a "mission," his dedication, constantly sketching, feels increasingly profound. I wanted to capture those fleeting moments when outside impressions transform into his unique rhythm.

    ② His ability to create through drawing may stem from witnessing the struggles of the previous generation in Busan. His cartoon-like imagination seems to be a process of collecting fragments of memories, reflecting both his personal history and the region’s past.

    ③ As Busan works to register its wartime heritage with UNESCO by 2028, Nam Jeong-hoon’s work naturally aligns with this goal. He continues walking the UN Peace Road, drawing as he goes, blending personal memories with public history.

    에브루의 할아버지는 한국전쟁 참전용사였다. 여러 해가 지난 뒤, 그의 손녀는 할아버지가 한국에서 처음 도착한 도시 부산에서의 이야기를 전한다.

    영화는 할아버지의 전쟁 기억이 담긴 부산의 유엔 기념 묘지를 방문하면서 시작되었다. 그곳에서 전사한 군인들의 희생을 느끼며 과거와 연결되었고, 할아버지 역시 그 속에 자신의 이야기를 가지고 있었다.

    또 다른 중요한 장소인 부산항은 변화와 전환을 상징한다. 할아버지가 처음 이곳에 도착했을 때 느꼈을 불안과 두려움을 상상하며, 이곳이 그의 과거와 나의 현재를 잇는 다리라는 것을 깨달았다.

    이 영화는 할아버지의 이야기를 통해 전쟁의 영향과 기억의 중요성을 전하고, 평화와 이해를 찾는 여정을 담고자 한다. 

    그리고 안타깝게도, 한국전쟁의 고통은 지금도 다른 곳에서 반복되고 있다.

    My film began when I visited to UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea, the city Busan that holds a significant place in my grandfather’s war memories. Walking through the cemetery where countless soldiers, including my grandfather’s comrades, are laid to rest, I felt a powerful connection to the past. It was as if the whispers of those who had fought and fallen were carried by the wind, guiding me through the rows of gravestones. Each name etched in stone told a story, a life interrupted, and a sacrifice made for something greater than oneself. My grandfather had his own story too.

    The Busan Port, another key location in the film, serves as a metaphor for transition and change. It was here that many soldiers, including my grandfather, arrived in a foreign land, filled with uncertainty and fear. Standing at the docks, I tried to imagine what he might have felt as a young man, thousands of miles from home, facing an uncertain future. This place, filled with so much history, became a bridge between his past and my present.

    My vision is clear: to create a film that not only tells my grandfather’s story but also serves as a universal narrative about the enduring impact of war, the importance of memory, and the journey to find peace and understanding.

    And unfortunately, this painful Korean war that happened in history is now happening somewhere else and is being repeated.

    These women have spent their entire lives working in the sea. In this film, they reminiscing how their relationship with the sea has changed over the years and how they treat their workplace - the sea.

    이 다큐멘터리는 바다와 자매처럼 살아가는 여성들의 이야기를 담고자 만들었다. 이 영화는 그들의 삶과 기억을 단순히 관찰한 작품이다.

    I made this documentary to tell a story of women who live in sisterhood with themselves and the sea. This movie is simply an observation of their life and memories.
